The United States (U.S.) has completed a massive military buildup in the Middle East with the arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group on Sunday. The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is now within striking distance of Iran, sparking fears that a war between the two nations could truly break out.
Citing a report from Turkiye Today on Monday (Jan 26, 2026), the USS Abraham Lincoln Strike Group reached the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) area of responsibility on Sunday, concluding a rapid 10-day redeployment from the Indo-Pacific region.
The deployment, ordered by President Donald Trump, includes advanced fighter jets, destroyers armed with cruise missiles, and a network of missile defense systems that officials now describe as fully operational.
This military posture marks a significant increase in the American presence near Iranian waters, although no attacks have been launched yet. Trump described the deployment as a deterrent, stating that the forces were moving “just in case” diplomacy fails, while warning that Iran faces potential retaliation harsher than anything it has ever experienced if the Tehran regime continues its suppression of protesters.
The USS Abraham Lincoln Strike Group consists of several Arleigh Burke-class destroyers equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles capable of striking targets deep inland. Carrier Air Wing 9 aboard the vessel includes F-35C Lightning II stealth fighters and F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, providing substantial offensive capabilities. Beyond the carrier strike group, the U.S. has stationed F-15E Strike Eagles in Jordan and B-52 Stratofortress bombers in Qatar, creating multiple layers of strike options.
The USS Abraham Lincoln crossed the Strait of Malacca heading west on January 20 before approaching the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea in late January. Intelligence data shared between the U.S. and Israel suggests that the Iranian leadership misled American officials by promising to halt the execution of protesters while secretly continuing the killings. Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has reportedly moved to a reinforced underground bunker, though the government strongly denies these reports. Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has placed its forces on high alert.
In response, the Iranian government inaugurated a giant mural in Tehran’s central square on Sunday, depicting a U.S. aircraft carrier and fighter jets on its flight deck being destroyed by missile attacks. The mural serves as a direct warning to Washington against conducting a military strike on Iran.
Next to the image of the destroyed jets on the carrier is a slogan that reads: “If you sow the wind, you shall reap the whirlwind.” The unveiling of the mural in Enghelab Square coincided with the arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln and its escort warships. Enghelab Square is used for state-organized rallies, and authorities change its murals based on national events. On Saturday, a commander of Iran’s IRGC warned that his forces are “more prepared than ever, with fingers on the trigger.”
