US-Iran Military Standoff: No-Fly Zone Declared in Strait of Hormuz
MIDDLE EAST – The geopolitical confrontation between Iran and the United States has entered a high-stakes phase, with both nations launching simultaneous military exercises. This dual mobilization has pushed regional tensions to a new peak.
Iran Issues NOTAM and No-Fly Zone
Citing reports from Anadolu, Tehran has issued a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM), effectively closing the airspace over the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The military activities are scheduled from January 27 to January 29. The notification warns commercial and civilian aircraft that the designated zone is “hazardous for transit,” effectively enforcing a temporary No-Fly Zone.
US AFCENT Drills and USS Abraham Lincoln
On the other side, Washington has initiated multi-day “combat readiness” exercises. The U.S. Air Forces Central (AFCENT) confirmed that these drills involve the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, which is already stationed in the region.
According to The Guardian, the U.S. exercises focus on:
- Rapid Deployment: Validating the speed of airpower mobilization.
- Regional Partnerships: Strengthening coordination with Middle Eastern allies.
- Flexible Response: Preparing multiple military options for potential contingencies.
President Donald Trump characterized the buildup as a pressure tactic. “We have a large fleet near Iran,” Trump stated, though he noted that “maybe we won’t have to use it,” signaling that a diplomatic window remains slightly ajar.
Diplomatic Deadlock and Saudi Neutrality
The prospect of dialogue remains bleak. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the U.S. stance, telling AFPthat “diplomacy through military threats is useless.” He further confirmed that Tehran is not currently pursuing negotiations with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff.
In a significant diplomatic shift, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian consulted with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS). According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), MBS delivered a critical assurance: Riyadh will not allow its territory or airspace to be used for military strikes against Iran.
