Since 2016, PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) has collaborated with the Muara Enim Regency Government to launch the Tanjung Enim Tourism City Program. The primary objective of this initiative is to transform Tanjung Enim—traditionally known as a coal mining hub—into a prominent tourist destination that can achieve economic independence in the future.

To realize the vision of Tanjung Enim as a Tourism City, PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) has constructed various facilities and infrastructure. One of the primary projects is the Botanical Garden (Collection Garden), established on a 17-hectare (ha) site of former mining land in Tanjung Enim, Lawang Kidul District.
This garden is specifically designed to become a major tourism landmark in Tanjung Enim, showcasing the successful transformation of mining areas into sustainable green spaces.

Niko Chandra, Corporate Secretary of PTBA, stated that the development of the Botanical Garden is a form of the company’s social responsibility toward the local community.
“Coal mining reserves will eventually be depleted. The Tanjung Enim Tourism City Program is expected to become one of the economic pillars for the growing community around Tanjung Enim,” said Niko.
Comprehensive Facilities and Future Landmarks
The Botanical Garden is currently equipped with various facilities, including:
- Management offices and educational buildings.
- Educational statues, cottages, and a camping ground.
- A food court, prayer rooms (musala), restrooms, and visitor parking.
Construction is still ongoing for road infrastructure, pedestrian areas, drainage systems, and a replica of the Sriwijaya Ship, which is set to become the park’s iconic landmark.
Bioregion Concept and Endemic Flora
The Botanical Garden is designed with a bioregion concept representing several Indonesian islands, including Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua, Java, Bali, and the Lesser Sunda Islands, as well as reclamation areas. Each bioregion will feature various endemic plants and fruit trees unique to each island. Additionally, the park will offer various recreational rides to attract tourists.
Commitment to Sustainability
“The Tanjung Enim Tourism City Program is a manifestation of PTBA’s commitment to its sustainability vision, particularly in sustainable community and environmental management. We hope this program will further enhance the community’s standard of living through the tourism sector,” Niko concluded.
