The Danish government has established a restricted military zone in the town of Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, for the storage of military equipment, the Greenland Police announced on Friday (Jan 23).
In a statement, the police confirmed they had approved the creation of temporary military zones in Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq to be utilized by the Danish Armed Forces. In Kangerlussuaq, the temporary military zone has officially been established and will be used to store military hardware.
Previously, a military storage zone was constructed in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, last week. The police also stated that an additional zone will be formed in the region next week to accommodate a floating hotel.
“The entire area will be closed to the public and placed under strict surveillance. Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. However, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that the territory should join the United States, citing the island’s strategic importance to national security.”
“Responding to these statements, Danish and Greenlandic authorities have warned Washington against any attempts to take over Greenland. They emphasized their expectation that territorial integrity remains respected.”
