A Day of Protection and Harvest: Saving Sea Turtles and Securing Dinner on Day 6
As the survival journey on the remote island continues into its sixth day, the mission expands beyond just finding food. In Part 5 of the series, Daeng Lala and his team take on the role of environmental guardians, balancing the need for survival with the responsibility of protecting the ocean’s most vulnerable inhabitants.
Environmental Guardians: Cleaning the Nesting Grounds The day begins with a sobering sight: the island’s pristine beaches are increasingly covered in plastic waste brought in by the tide [00:00]. This waste directly threatens local wildlife, especially Sea Turtles looking for a place to nest. The team dedicates hours to clearing the sand, ensuring that the turtles have a clear path to lay their eggs safely.
A Rare Find: Protecting Sea Turtle Eggs While cleaning, the team discovers a set of turtle tracks leading to a nesting site. With the help of “Kakek” (Grandfather), a local expert, they identify a nest full of eggs [03:46]. In a beautiful act of conservation, instead of harvesting the eggs for food, Daeng Lala decides to create a protected sanctuary. He compensates Kakek to ensure the eggs remain undisturbed until they hatch, turning a former egg-hunter into a guardian of the species [04:32].
Racing the Sun: Sunset Fishing Success As evening approaches, the team shifts their focus to securing a meal. Despite a looming storm, they head out for a final fishing session. The results are spectacular—the water is teeming with fish, leading to a “strike” on almost every line [10:04]. They even spot dolphins and sharks in the area, a sign of a healthy marine ecosystem [13:31]. The team hauls in a massive amount of fresh fish just as the sun begins to set.
The Night Feast: Traditional Parende Soup The day concludes with a communal dinner under the island stars. The fresh catch is prepared as Parende, a traditional clear fish soup from the Buton region. Using local tamarind and minimal spices, the natural sweetness of the fresh fish becomes the star of the dish [14:38]. Sharing the warm soup with the team and local residents who helped during the day is the perfect end to a day dedicated to both the sea and its survival.
